Varying the shapes and sizes of the boards that I work on means that I am taking into consideration the overall composition of the artwork before I even make a mark. A vertical horizontal panel will suit a work where I want to convey the height of rocks and cliffs or a waterfall. Horizontal works work well to suggest more of a panoramic view of the landscape.
